Persuasive Essay Essay When you rummage through your refrigerator what do you seek? A bag of chips, a fruity flavored yogurt, some buttery popcorn? Whatever it is, it all fills you up. Whether it is with a junky treat or something partially healthy. Whatever you choose, it impacts you. It affects the way you sleep, the energy you have, and your blood sugar. So the little discussion of picking a chocolate bar and an apple impacts you greatly in the long run. This is why you should start making healthier choices now when you are still growing. I must admit it is easier for me to choose eating junk food. It may seem yummy and delicious, but its not. Almost every single piece of junk food is either full with fat or artificial flavorings. Did you know that the McDonalds fries contain 610 calories and 29 grams of fat? If you ate a Burger King, meal that contains 1,800 calories, it would take you nearly 6 hours of intense bicycle riding to burn away the calories. The average American kid eats at McDonalds at least one time each month. Teenagers drink around the average of 760 cans of soda per year. And not only does junk food just add fat and other unwanted substances to your body, it also harms you. Obesity is the second cause of death in America. The consumption of sodas has increased the risk of diabetes. Junk food is the major cause of most heart diseases or failures. Junk food causes high cholesterol, which causes long-term damage to your liver. Wow, pretty scary right? Ways to decrease junk food consumption would be the next time when you are rummaging through your refrigerator stop and choose the vegetable section. Pick a banana, or apple. Or leave junk food off-limits until special days or weekends. There are multiple ways, but the biggest way is the next time something sugary is about to go into your mouth, stop and think about all the negative sides. Because not only does junk food affect your weight, it affects your future.

Different Types of   Organized Crime in Canada   Organized crime in Canada has many faces. The people who engage in organized crime are as varied as the types of organized crimes they engage in. There are essentially four categories of organized crime in Canada. These four categories are: (A) Aboriginal organized crime groups, (B) Outlaw motorcycle gangs, (C) Traditional Italian Mafia crime groups, ethnic groups such as Asian Triads and Vietnamese gangs, (D) Colombian cartels and emerging crime groups from Russia and Nigeria (Beare 1996: 75). Any of these groups could potentially be linked to such illegal activity as: the trafficking of narcotics, extortion, loan-sharking, various types of frauds, smuggling of cigarettes, alcohol, weapons and people (illegal aliens), pornography, prostitution, murder, and gambling. It is true that any of the groups mentioned in the above categories could be involved in any of the crimes just mentioned. However each category tends to have certain crimes that it commits with regularity, crimes th at, that particular group may specialize in.As well these groups tend to have certain crimes that they do not touch. Perhaps they stay away from a particular crime because it is the speciality of a stronger group. A look into which groups do which crimes will be helpful.   Aboriginal organized crime groups tend to deal with crimes that many people do not consider a big problem. These groups tend to focus on the smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol. Aboriginal groups also tend to take part in the founding of illegal gambling facilities. Although these offences in and of themselves may appear to be rather innocent; the large amount of money involved in these enterprises soon changes the nature of the game... ...ent of all the cocaine consumed in Canada and the United States (Beare 1996: 86). The Colombian cartels control the bulk of the cocaine market through out most of the western world. Enforcement officials are only just begging to understand the extent and the sophistication of the Colombian cartels' criminal activities here in Canada. The links that the Colombians are making with other criminal groups could prove to be very dangerous.   This has been a brief overview of the different categories of organized crime one can find in Canada. The only good to be said about all of this is that at least there are many different groups. True it makes the groups harder to track down. Introduction In the case study honesty testing at the Carter Cleaning Company, there are issues of theft. They find themselves struggling with the processes of screening for honest hardworking employees. The owners, Jennifer and her father, are looking for a way to minimize the employee turnover and more so is theft prone. Questions and Answers to the Questions What would be the advantages and disadvantages to Jennifer’s company of routinely administering honesty tests to all its employees? According to Dessler (2008), some advantages are that honesty tests are â€Å"designed to predict job applicants’ proneness to dishonesty and other forms counterproductivity. Most of the tests measure attitudes regarding things like tolerance of others who steal, acceptance of rationalizations for theft, and admission of theft-related activities (p. 236).† These types of test prove to have minimal legal risk to employers (p.237). Specifically, what other screening techniques could the company use to screen out theft-prone and turnover-prone employees, and how exactly could these be used? Dessler mentions the use of background checks such as verifying a potential candidate’s former employer is a way to clear a candidate by knowing about their work ethics. Another way would be through credit reports. These types of reports show a potential candidate’s â€Å"credit standing, indebtedness, reputation, character, and lifestyles (p. 230).† How should her company terminate employees caught stealing, and what kind of procedure should be set up for handling reference calls about these employees when they go to other companies looking for jobs? Employees should be terminated immediately. In order to help other companies, there should be a procedure such as writing everything down or making notes in the employee’s folder for all future references. Future  employees would be advised of such procedure during the interviewing process. Fine (2013) states â€Å"Once the right test has been chosen, and with the organization’s objectives still in mind, the next step is to strategically position the test within the recruitment process for maximal effectiveness (p. 42).† Summary As seen in the case of the Carter Cleaning Company, employee turnover is a problem. In order to minimize such problems there needs to be an effective hiring procedure. Dessler speaks of antitheft screening procedure. They are asking direct question during face-to-face interviews, listen to applicant and do less talking (this will allow the applicant to speak freely and through this they may speak more truthfully), do a credit check, check all employment and personal references, use paper-and-pencil honesty tests and psychological tests, test for drugs, and establish a search-and-seizure policy and conduct searches (p. 237). Advertisements are everywhere, combining images and words together to create a message to sell a product. The initial impression is that the advertisers are just trying to sell their products, but there often seems to be an underlying message. It is often heard that â€Å"sex sells.† So, many advertisers will use beautiful women and men in their advertisements to try to market a product. The hope is that â€Å"sex will sell,† and people will go out and buy what the ads are selling. There are many advertisements and commercials that use this approach. Prime examples of this are the advertisements for Orbit Gum and A Diamond is Forever. Also, the commercials for Levi jeans use sex to promote the sale of their brand. Since there is no ring shown, it is implied that buying this ring will make your relationship more sensual. It makes a man think that his girlfriend will love him even more for buying her that ring. It tries to play on people’s love for each other. â€Å"Sex as Symbol in Fashion Advertising† points out that â€Å"the creators of any advertisement are trying to generate some kind of an effect or emotional response† (184). This ad does exactly that. It plays on a couple’s emotions. Likewise, the advertisers for Orbit Gum use a common situation involving a man and a woman to sell their product. The ad pictures a side view of a construction worker’s face, with his mouth open, looking at a woman. However, the only parts of the woman that are seen are her legs and feet. The ad draws attention to the fact that the man is only looking at one part of the woman’s body. The ad reads, â€Å"Dirty mouth? Clean it up with Orbit.† It is implied that since the man is looking at just the woman’s legs, he is thinking of something sexual, possibly even saying it out loud. Therefore, he is being dirty, and the only way to become clean is to chew some Orbit gum. In this ad, the woman is seen as a sex object.
